Federal Grant Awarded to Jewish Federations to Expand PCTI Care Nationwide

Jewish Federations of North America have received an $8.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Community Living to expand person-centered, trauma-informed (PCTI) care nationwide.

The initiative is a partnership with the Network of Jewish Human Service Agencies and the Claims Conference, building on years of work supporting Holocaust survivors and vulnerable communities.

This funding will expand the nation’s capacity to deliver PCTI care to Holocaust survivors, older adults with a history of trauma, and their family caregivers. The PCTI approach is a holistic service delivery model that promotes the dignity, strength, and empowerment of individuals with a history of trauma.

“We’ve seen people’s lives changed when they receive the right kind of care. Holocaust survivors taught us how to do this,” said Shelley Rood Wernick, Associate Vice President, Center on Aging, Trauma, and Holocaust Survivor Care. “The PCTI approach is universal and we’re sharing it broadly.”

Jewish Federations Center on Aging, Trauma, and Holocaust Survivor Care (Center) is the nation’s official resource center for aging and trauma.

It continues to lead the way in funding innovative programs, developing resources, and offering educational opportunities to train the Aging Services Network in the PCTI approach.

This grant is a powerful recognition of the Center’s ten-year history of advancing person-centered, trauma-informed care. To date, there are:

Over 25,000 professionals and volunteers who have been trained in PCTI care.

More than 49,000 Holocaust survivors, 23,000 older adults with a history of trauma, and 9,000 family caregivers who have received vital support and services.

Holocaust survivors have shown how trauma impacts people throughout the life course and into older adulthood. With this award, the federal government is making a solid investment in advancing the quality of care for all as we age.
