As spring unfolds across the Lehigh Valley, our community moved through the special events of remembrance, reflection, and celebration. During this Season of Independence, we honor our past, recognize sacrifice, celebrate resilience, and look ahead with hope.
We began with Yom HaShoah, a solemn day of remembrance for the 6 million Jews who perished in the Holocaust. Through memorial programs and moments of reflection, and the students’ reading of the names of those who perished, we reaffirmed our responsibility to remember, to educate, and to ensure that the lessons of history endure for future generations.
This year, our community welcomed speaker Lois Roman, from the Memorial Scrolls Trust, which safeguards Torah scrolls rescued from devastated communities, serving as enduring symbols of survival and continuity. We were privileged to learn about the rescued Torah scrolls in our community with moving presentations from Temple Beth El, Brith Sholom, Keneseth Israel, and Jewish Day School, who all brought personal meaning to this day of memory and honored the Torah scrolls in their care. We were also privileged to highlight the work of our Holocaust Resource Center led by Shari Spark.
Soon after, we observed Yom Hazikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day, when we honor the soldiers and victims of terror who gave their lives in defense of the State of Israel. As part of our observance, we featured Gilad Segev, who presented Project Heroes, also known as the Jewish Heroism Experience for Humanity, to reshape the narrative of the Jewish people from one of victimhood to one of heroism. Their mission is to highlight timeless Jewish values of courage, resilience, and moral strength, as reflected throughout history and in the present day.
The Season of Independence transitions almost immediately into the joy of Yom HaAtzmaut when we celebrate the founding of the State of Israel and its remarkable achievements. This emotional progression, from mourning to celebration, captures the resilience and enduring spirit of the Jewish people. We were delighted to welcome JDS and JCC students for a blue-and-white basketball game, and we all enjoyed the JDS flag dance ceremony.
As one season concludes, the Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley is proud to celebrate a time of achievement, growth, and community connection. This time of year brings a special opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of our graduating students, each one a testament to dedication, resilience, and the strong values nurtured within our community.
From high school seniors preparing to embark on new academic journeys, to college graduates stepping into careers and advanced studies, we honor their hard work and perseverance. These milestones are not only personal achievements, but also reflections of the support systems of families, educators, mentors, and community institutions that have helped guide them along the way. We extend our heartfelt mazal tov to all graduates and their loved ones.
At the same time, the Federation is looking ahead to our Annual Meeting and Celebration, which will take place on Wednesday evening, June 10. This gathering will provide an opportunity to reflect on the past year’s impact, celebrate communal successes, and share a vision for the future. Together, we will recognize outstanding leadership and renew our commitment to strengthening Jewish life throughout the Lehigh Valley and beyond.
The annual meeting is more than a tradition. It’s a moment to come together as a community, united by shared purpose and values. Whether you are a longtime supporter or newly engaged, your presence and participation help shape the direction of our collective work.
We look forward to gathering in person to reflect on the past year and to embracing the opportunities ahead.
Together, we are Here for Good, continuing to build a vibrant, caring, secure, and connected Jewish community.
